报告内容: The recent decades witnessed an attenuation in the inverse farm size-productivity relationship in many developing countries, including China. This article provides an explanation of such attenuation from an often-neglected angle, linking changes in the inverse relationship and farmers’ heterogeneous supply response to price expectation. Applying two-step system GMM estimator to dynamic panel data models using data on nearly 18,000 rice-producing households from China’s National Rural Surveillance Network, we find that when expecting higher output price, large farms tend to intensify farming while small farms tend to expand farm size, which serves to mitigate the inverse relationship. These findings suggest that the currently high productivity of large farms may be a beguiling product of recent distortive grain-market policies and may be undermined if governmental price support were to be removed in the future.
